Arun Kumar Sagar: From BSP Youth Leader to BJP Member of Parliament
Arun Kumar Sagar, a prominent Indian politician, has been representing the Shahjahanpur constituency in the Lok Sabha since 2019. His journey from being a dynamic youth leader within the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to becoming a Member of Parliament for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is marked by a series of significant milestones and transitions.
Political Career:
Arun Kumar Sagar started his political career as a popular youth leader representing the Dalit community in western Uttar Pradesh for the BSP. He served as the District President of Shahjahanpur for four terms and also held the position of Bareilly Zone Coordinator within the party. Notably, at the age of 32, he was appointed as the Vice-President of the State Construction Corporation, a position equivalent to the status of Minister of State in the Uttar Pradesh Government.
In 2012, Sagar contested the Powayan constituency on a BSP ticket but faced defeat against the Samajwadi Party’s candidate, Shakuntla Devi, by a narrow margin. However, in 2015, he was expelled from the BSP for alleged anti-party activities.
Undeterred by the setback, Arun Kumar Sagar swiftly joined the BJP, which was actively seeking a strong Dalit leader to bolster its ranks. Recognizing his potential, the BJP appointed him as the Vice-President of the party’s Braj region unit in 2015.
In March 2019, the BJP announced Sagar as its candidate for the Shahjahanpur Lok Sabha seat, replacing the incumbent MP and Union Minister, Krishna Raj. In the general elections held in May 2019, Sagar emerged victorious by a significant margin, securing a landslide victory over his nearest rival, Amar Chand Jauhar of the Mahagathbandhan alliance. His victory by a margin of 268,418 votes was the largest in the Rohilkhand region, reflecting his widespread support among the electorate.
Arun Kumar Sagar’s electoral success underscores his growing influence and popularity in Uttar Pradesh politics. As a Member of Parliament, he continues to champion the interests of his constituents and work towards the development of Shahjahanpur and its surrounding areas. His journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring leaders and underscores the importance of perseverance and adaptability in the ever-changing landscape of Indian politics.
